From stadium anthems to dance floor chart-toppers, Daniel Baron continues to push the envelope as South Africa’s own bonafide multi-genre award-winning hitmaker.

With a career spanning over a decade, he has yielded 15 number one hits, four critically acclaimed albums and a long string of chart hits written and produced for numerous respected local acts. Baron now celebrates two prestigious South African Music Awards nominations with the release of his new single ‘Roses’ –  his most moving single yet.

The track features on his fourth studio LP ‘City Of God & The Jungle Below’, a mammoth 25-track concept album set in a fictional post-apocalyptic world – a project that was five years in the making. Released in December 2021, the eclectic record features the stadium-sized inspirational pop-rock anthem ‘How To Feel’, as well as the R&B infused alt-pop single ‘Religious Drug’ – both of which topped radio charts around the country. Now, ‘Roses’ is set to show fans a different side to the pop star.

Daniel began writing ‘Roses’ over ten years ago while he was going through his first heartbreak. Always being one to process his feelings through song, Baron put his feeling to paper. However, Baron never completed the song until he was inspired to revisit it during this album creation process.

“I’m such a sucker for ballads. I love writing them and I’m obsessed with all the classic heartbreak ballads in musical history. ‘Roses’ is such an emotional song for me and has easily become my favourite ballad I’ve ever written. The song has got a classic rock feeling to it with a young-love naivety that I think people should always hold on to. Sonically, it’s accompanied by a simple piano before a beautiful orchestral arrangement comes in. It’s a real moving tearjerker and I hope anyone who hears it is as moved by it as I am.”

Daniel’s creative and technical work were recently recognised by the South African Music Awards who nominated the album in this year’s Best Alternative Music Album category and Best Engineered Album Of The Year category. The album was produced, mixed and engineered by Daniel at Hit Kitchen Studios and it was mastered by Darryn Muller at the AudioRoom.

“This is the album that I believe is the greatest body of work that I have created and possibly the greatest that I will ever create,” Daniel says. “The songs on the new record tell a story both personal and universal, whilst showcasing some of the singer’s best vocal performances yet.

“I believe that all people share this same story of journeying through this beautiful, scary, crazy jungle of life, eventually learning that it’s not all about us. We have to transcend our own egos and then give of ourselves to one another, to ultimately reach the City of God.”
