Pastor Adeboye’s 100-day fasting mandate sparks heated debates about spiritual growth, loyalty, and the realities of daily life in Nigeria.

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has sparked heated reactions with the announcement of a 100-day fasting period scheduled for 2025. The declaration, made during the ongoing 2024 Holy Ghost Congress, has drawn mixed responses from enthusiastic followers and skeptical critics alike.

In a widely circulated video from the Congress, held at Redemption Camp, Lagos, Pastor Adeboye highlighted fasting as an essential spiritual practice. While acknowledging that it is not explicitly mandated in scripture, he stressed its importance for achieving spiritual victory.

“I’m talking to soldiers of Christ. I’m trying to share with you the secret of never falling again. There is nowhere in the Bible where it is written that the just shall live by fasting. What the Bible says is the just shall live by faith.”

He urged congregants to prepare mentally and physically for the fasting period, adding:

“I want to warn you in advance that in the coming year, you will fast.”

Mixed Reactions from the Public

The announcement has sparked polarized reactions across social media and within the RCCG community. Devoted followers embraced the call, viewing it as a profound step toward spiritual growth and alignment with divine purpose. One enthusiastic supporter commented: “Fasting strengthens us spiritually; this is a divine opportunity to grow closer to God.”

However, critics were quick to question the timing and practicality of such a prolonged spiritual exercise, particularly amid Nigeria’s prevailing economic hardships. Many voiced concerns about the physical strain and challenges it might impose on members already grappling with daily survival.

“100 days of fasting? How does this align with the struggles of people who are barely eating due to the economy? This seems excessive,” one commenter wrote on Twitter.

Others noted that the extended fasting period might alienate less-devout members, sparking debates about balancing spiritual commitments with personal well-being.
