In a move aimed at boosting economic development and cooperation between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea, President Bola Tinubu and his Equatorial Guinean counterpart, Teodoro Mbasogo, signed an agreement on the Gulf of Guinea Pipeline Project in Malabo on Wednesday.
The agreement, which is a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship between the two countries, covers key aspects such as legislative and regulatory measures, establishment and operation of the pipeline, transit of natural gas, ownership of the pipeline, and general principles.
During a private meeting preceding the signing of the agreement, President Tinubu and President Mbasogo discussed various issues, including employment creation, food security, multilateral relations, and conflict resolution mechanisms on the continent. According to President Tinubu, the two leaders emphasized the importance of promoting peace and stability in their countries and on the continent.
In his remarks, President Tinubu emphasized that Africa’s development depends on its ability to find solutions to its own problems, rather than relying on external assistance. He urged African leaders to prioritize industrialization efforts, research and development programs, and education to navigate the challenges facing the continent.
The two leaders also discussed challenges related to security, the African Continental Free Trade Area, and food security. President Tinubu emphasized the need for African countries to work together to address their problems and achieve sustainable development.
In his remarks, President Mbasogo hailed the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea as “rewarding” and emphasized the need for deeper cooperation across various areas. He also reiterated Africa’s vision of having a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council, which he believed is crucial for the continent’s development.
Equatorial Guinea’s leader pledged to work with Nigeria to realize this goal, describing the signing of the agreement as a strategic step towards Africa’s development.
