Kaduna, Nigeria – The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested two brothers, Yahaya AbdulKadir and Abdullahi AbdulKadir, for allegedly burying a 16-year-old boy alive in Zaria Local Government Area over a missing phone.
The victim, Abubakar Aliyu, was accused of stealing a phone valued at N35,000 at a construction site in Abuja, where he and the suspects were working as laborers. Following the accusation, the laborers decided that Aliyu’s daily wages would be used to replace the missing phone. Upset by this resolution, Aliyu left Abuja and returned to his hometown in Zaria.
The two suspects, determined to retrieve the phone, trailed Aliyu to Zaria. On August 10, 2024, they allegedly located him, forcefully took him to an abandoned building, and dug a hole. They reportedly bound his hands and feet, covered his mouth, and buried him alive, leaving only his head above ground covered with rags.
According to a statement by the Kaduna Police Command spokesperson, Mansir Hassan, the teenager was rescued by a passerby who heard him coughing from within the hole.
The police subsequently arrested the two suspects, who admitted to committing the act as a form of interrogation regarding the missing phone.
The investigation is ongoing, and the suspects are expected to be charged in court soon.
