Dominique P., a 71-year-old former employee of France’s state-owned power company, EDF, is the primary suspect in this harrowing case. Alongside him, 50 other men stand trial in the southern city of Avignon, accused of participating in the repeated assaults on his now 72-year-old wife.

According to police, the abuse began in 2011 when the couple lived near Paris and continued after they moved to Mazan, a small village in Provence. Investigators have identified 51 of the 72 men accused of committing a total of 92 abuses.

Prosecutors allege that Dominique used powerful sedatives, including the anxiety-reducing drug Temesta, to render his wife unconscious. Over the years, he allegedly recruited men online to rape her in their home, filming the assaults and using degrading language to encourage the perpetrators.

Despite some of the men claiming they were merely helping a couple explore sexual fantasies, investigators assert that all were aware the woman had been drugged without her knowledge.

The victim, who discovered the abuse only in 2020, arrived at the courthouse supported by her three children. She has requested a public trial, determined to bring the full extent of the crimes to light. “For the first time, she will have to live through the abuses that she endured over 10 years,” said her lawyer, Antoine Camus.

Multiple Investigations

Dominique, who confessed to being sexually abused as a child, now faces additional charges, including a 1991 murder and Sexual abuse and an attempted rape in 1999. Despite these allegations, experts believe he does not suffer from any mental illness but has a deep-seated need for power over women.

The trial is expected to continue until December 20.
