At the forefront of this change is Mustapha Gajibo, an innovative entrepreneur who is making waves by converting petrol-powered minibuses into electric vehicles (EVs) and building electric buses from scratch. These electric minibuses, which have been in operation for over a month, can cover a distance of 100 km on a single charge, offering commuters a cleaner, more efficient way to travel.
Gajibo’s initiative is not only tackling the environmental challenges posed by pollution but also providing a practical solution to the volatile fuel market.
Supporting the green shift is, Nigerian government’s strategic collaboration with Yutong, a leading Chinese bus manufacturer. Over the next seven years, this partnership aims to introduce 12,000 electric buses to Lagos State, along with the establishment of a local assembly plant for EVs.
This initiative is expected to generate thousands of jobs and drive technological advancement in the country. These electric buses, designed to run up to 200 kilometers on a single charge, represent the first smart electric bus initiative in both Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa.
This development is a critical component of Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan, which aligns with the global push towards cleaner energy solutions. The government’s focus on constructing EV assembly plants within the country not only helping to reduce Nigeria’s carbon footprint but also stimulating economic growth through the creation of new industries.
Central to the initiative is the Sustainable Transport Initiative, spearheaded by Oando Clean Energy Limited (OCEL). This movement supports Nigeria’s ambitious goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2060.
The introduction of electric mass transit buses and the development of an electric vehicle infrastructure ecosystem are key milestones in ensuring Nigeria stays at the forefront of the clean energy revolution.
