Tensions Rise as RSIEC Proceeds with Polls Despite Court Ruling, Sparking Outcry from Wike’s Loyalists
Supporters of Nyesom Wike, former Rivers State governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), staged a massive protest in Port Harcourt on Saturday, decrying the conduct of the ongoing local government elections.
The protest followed a recent Rivers State High Court ruling that ordered a suspension of the elections due to alleged procedural irregularities. Demonstrators wielded placards with bold messages such as “Obey Court Order” and “No Justice, No Election,” demanding that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) halt the elections in line with the court’s decision.
Wike’s supporters claim RSIEC ignored the court’s ruling by proceeding with the polls, sparking widespread frustration and calls for justice. The legal dispute has raised concerns about the integrity of the election process, with Wike’s camp pushing for a postponement to ensure fairness.
Despite the High Court’s judgment, RSIEC pressed ahead with the elections, triggering the protests and amplifying tensions in the state.
