23 States and FCT Implement 65-Year Retirement Age for Teachers, NUT Reports
Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) announced on Saturday that 23 states, along with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have successfully adopted the 65-year retirement age for educators established by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2020. This change marked an extension from the previous retirement age of 60 years.
Titus Amba, the National President of the union, expressed satisfaction with the implementation across these regions in a statement reported in Abuja. “It is encouraging to see that 23 states, the FCT, and the Federal Government have embraced the new retirement age for teachers,” Amba remarked.
He took the opportunity to appeal to the remaining states to promptly implement the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers. He emphasized that doing so would not only benefit the educational system by retaining experienced teachers but also help address staff shortages in schools.
Furthermore, the union expressed concern regarding the lack of vacancy declarations and the consequent stagnation of teachers in the directorate cadre who are serving in Unity Schools. Amba asserted that educators who have committed to teaching and are fulfilling their professional roles deserve support and should be allowed to advance in their careers and receive timely promotions, comparable to their counterparts in State Teaching Services.
