PDP Suspends National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu

Abuja, Nigeria – The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has deepened as a faction of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) has suspended the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, and the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, over alleged disloyalty to the party.

This development follows an earlier announcement by a faction loyal to Damagum, which suspended the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, and the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, on similar grounds of disloyalty.

In a fresh twist, Ologunagba issued a statement on Friday, announcing the suspension of both Damagum and Anyanwu. According to the statement, the decision was made after the NWC deliberated on a series of complaints against the two officials, particularly concerning a letter they addressed to the Court of Appeal in the case involving 27 former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. These lawmakers had vacated their seats after defecting from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The NWC condemned this anti-party activity of the Acting National Chairman and the National Secretary, which is in gross violation of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017) and their Oath of Office,” the statement read.

Citing Sections 57, 58, and 59 of the party’s constitution, the NWC suspended Damagum and Anyanwu from all party meetings, activities, and programs, pending further investigation by the National Disciplinary Committee.
