Prabowo Subianto Sworn in as New President, Eyes Global Prominence And Signals Ambitious Agenda Amid Concerns Over Human Rights Legacy and Economic Growth Challenges

JAKARTA, INDONESIA- Former general Prabowo Subianto was sworn in as Indonesia’s new president on Sunday after a landslide victory earlier this year. The 73-year-old nationalist, known for his fiery rhetoric and controversial human rights record, now leads the world’s fourth-most populous nation and Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

Addressing lawmakers at his inauguration, Prabowo pledged to serve all Indonesians, even those who didn’t vote for him. He vowed to combat corruption, protect democracy, and maintain Indonesia’s non-aligned foreign policy while boosting its global presence.

“We don’t want to disturb other countries, but we will not let any countries disturb us,” he said

underscoring his focus on territorial defence.

Balancing Global Powers

Prabowo’s first foreign visit after his election was to China, followed by trips to Russia, Australia, and other key nations, signaling his intent to strengthen Indonesia’s global ties.

He inherits a country rich in natural resources, including the world’s largest nickel reserves, and home to 280 million people, half of whom are under 30. His administration will also focus on economic growth, aiming for an ambitious 8% target.

However, his presidency brings international scrutiny due to past accusations of human rights abuses. Prabowo was discharged from the military for allegedly ordering the abduction of democracy activists in the 1990s, a charge he denies.

A New Chapter for Indonesia

Thousands of supporters lined the streets of Jakarta to celebrate the new leader, while foreign dignitaries, including Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, attended the ceremony. Despite his controversial past, Prabowo’s image has been reshaped, especially among younger voters, helping him secure a decisive win.

As he takes the reins from outgoing president Joko Widodo, Prabowo faces the challenge of navigating Indonesia’s economic ties with China and its growing security partnerships with the U.S. and Australia.

The world will be watching as Indonesia’s new leader steps onto the global stage.
