Port Harcourt, Nigeria – Former Niger Delta militant leader, Mujahid Asari Dokubo, has publicly accused President Bola Tinubu of betrayal, citing alleged neglect despite his active role in supporting Tinubu’s campaign.

In a video that has gained traction online, Dokubo expressed his frustration and announced plans to form a political alliance with Northern Nigeria, distancing himself from the Yoruba political sphere.

Dokubo, who had been a vocal supporter of Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, claimed he sacrificed significant resources and risked personal safety to support the president. He expressed disappointment over what he perceives as a lack of reciprocation from Tinubu.

“I apologize to our elders for doubting them when they formed alliances with the North,” Dokubo stated in the video. “As young men, we are now prepared to renew that alliance.”

Reflecting on his contributions, Dokubo said, “From today, I will work and form an alliance with the North. President Tinubu betrayed me after I spent all my money and emptied my bank account campaigning for him. The Tinubu I know now isn’t the Tinubu I used to know. Only the Northerners can work with the Ijaw people.”

His remarks signal a significant shift, as he criticized the Yoruba political establishment, saying, “We can’t work with Yoruba people; they are a betrayal to us. We risked our lives by voting and doing everything, and this is what we get?”

While it remains unclear when Dokubo’s relationship with Tinubu deteriorated, there were early signs of tension. Dokubo’s highly publicized visit to the Presidential Villa in June raised speculation after his comments on the military’s “entitlement mentality” and his support for Tinubu’s anti-corruption stance drew considerable attention.

Dokubo concluded by stating, “Nigerians can hold me accountable if Tinubu fails,” underscoring his prior commitment to the administration’s success.
