Nigeria records 51 new cases of coronavirus in one day


Nigeria recorded 51 new cases of coronavirus infected persons, the highest rate since the pandemic broke out in the country in March, 2020.

This was made known by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) via its official Twitter handle.

According to the post, Lagos state had 32 new cases, followed by Kano state with 6 new cases. Kwara state had 5 new cases, Abuja had 2 new cases, Oyo state had 2 new cases, Katsina state had 2 new cases, while Ekiti and Ogun states had one new case each.

The total confirmed cases in the country now stands at 493, with 159 discharged patients and 17 deaths.

Meanwhile, a Nigerian medical doctor,Emeka Chugbo has died from the coronavirus disease in Lagos. He was taken to Lagos University Teaching Hospital on Monday with “severe symptoms” and died on Wednesday, according to the hospital.

The 60-year-old doctor also had a history of asthma, his friend Lawal Oyeneyin told local media.

The patient at Dr Chugbo’s clinic who had Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus, died last week.

A medic in northern Nigeria, Aliyu Yakubu, became the first doctor to die of coronavirus in the country on Saturday.

The Nigerian Medical Association, the umbrella body of doctors in the country, says the slow testing process and a lack of adequate protective gear and testing kits are putting medical staff at risk.
