investigative panel has confirmed that Bobrisky did not step outside the prison walls during the entire six-month sentence, slamming shut rumors of clandestine outings.

The legal troubles of Nigerian celebrity Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, known as Bobrisky; an investigative panel established by Nigeria’s Minister of Interior has confirmed that he did not sleep outside prison during his six-month sentence for naira abuse and money laundering.

Background of the Case

Bob was sentenced to six months in prison on April 12, 2024, after pleading guilty to charges of naira abuse and money laundering. The Federal High Court in Lagos, presided over by Justice Abimbola Awogboro, found him guilty of tampering with naira notes during social events. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accused him of failing to report financial transactions amounting to over N53 million related to his business activities.

The court’s ruling emphasized the need for accountability in financial dealings and served as a warning to others who might consider similar actions. Justice Awogboro stated, “The act of mutilating the naira notes has become a menace that continues to damage the country’s image”.

Following his sentencing, Bobrisky was initially held at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre before being transferred to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kirikiri. Reports suggested he was placed in a “special cell,” raising concerns about such preferential treatment. However, the Nigerian Correctional Service denied these claims, asserting that he completed his term within the prison system without any special privileges.

Despite this denial, sources indicated that Bob had access to certain comforts during his incarceration, such as family visits and a relatively private environment. The investigative panel concluded that while he may have enjoyed some privileges, there was no evidence to support claims that he slept outside of prison or received undue favoritism from prison officials.

Investigative Findings

The panel’s investigation aimed to address public concerns regarding corruption and favoritism within Nigeria’s correctional facilities. It found no substantial evidence linking Bobrisky’s incarceration conditions to bribery or external influence.

Key Findings:
  • No Evidence of Bribery: The panel confirmed that there were no indications of bribery or external influence affecting Bobrisky’s prison experience.
  • Completion of Sentence: Bobrisky served his full six-month term as mandated by the court.
  • Limited Privileges: While he had access to family visits and a private cell, these arrangements did not equate to sleeping outside prison or receiving special treatment.

Bobrisky’s case ignited debates on social media regarding celebrity culture and accountability in Nigeria. Many fans had expressed skepticism about whether he truly experienced the hardships associated with incarceration. Just hours after his release on August 5, 2024, Bobrisky hosted a lavish party, exuding confidence and vitality, prompting more questions about the authenticity of his prison experience.

In a viral video following his release, he boasted about returning from jail with a “nice body,” further fueling speculation about whether he had truly endured the rigors of imprisonment. Critics argue that such statements undermine the seriousness of his legal issues and reflect broader societal challenges regarding accountability among public figures.

Following his release, Bobrisky had faced fresh allegations from social media activist Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan regarding an unpaid debt of N4 million. VDM claimed that Bobrisky borrowed this amount while preparing for his time in custody but failed to repay it after his release. Additionally, an audio clip surfaced where Bob allegedly claimed to have paid N15 million to EFCC operatives for dropping charges against him,a claim he later denied as fabricated.
