54-Year-Old Nigerian Woman Delivers Rare Set of Decuplets In Benin Republic
In a remarkable and unprecedented event, Alake Latoyosi, a 54-year-old Nigerian woman, has given birth to 11 babies in Cotonou, Benin Republic, following an extraordinary pregnancy lasting over three years. The astonishing delivery has sparked widespread attention and reflection on historical precedents.
A Miraculous Birth Journey
Latoyosi, alongside her 56-year-old husband Yahaya Nafiu, experienced a unique sequence of events. The first set of six babies was born on August 7, while a second set of five followed a week later on August 14, 2024. Tragically, two of the girls did not survive the delivery.
Nafiu reported that medical professionals faced challenges in monitoring and managing the pregnancy due to difficulties in determining the babies’ positions. Despite these obstacles, Latoyosi delivered the babies successfully with the assistance of birth attendants, showcasing what Nafiu describes as a miracle.
This event has drawn parallels with a historical occurrence in Ilorin, Nigeria. Abdulmumini Abdulmalik, the national president of the IEDPU, highlighted a similar case from approximately a century ago. Following World War I, a woman in Ilorin gave birth to decuplets, making history in the region. This recent delivery of 11 babies is being seen as a modern echo of that historic event.
Calls for Support
Abdulmalik has called on the government and community of Ilorin Emirate to provide financial assistance to Nafiu and his family to support the care of the newborns and their mother. The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, was also acknowledged for his role in this extraordinary event, reflecting on the historical significance and communal spirit surrounding it.
