Air Peace Suspends Flight Operations Nationwide Amid NiMet Strike
Air Peace, Nigeria’s leading airline, has announced the immediate halt of all its flight operations across the country due to an ongoing strike by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
The airline made the announcement in a statement released on Wednesday, emphasizing that the decision was taken with passenger safety as a priority. NiMet’s weather updates, particularly the Current Nowcast of Hazardous Weather (CNH) reports, are deemed crucial for ensuring safe landings, especially during the rainy season characterized by heavy showers and thunderstorms.
The statement released by Air Peace read, “We regret to inform you that due to the ongoing strike by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Air Peace is suspending all flight operations nationwide with immediate effect. This decision is necessary because NiMet is the agency responsible for issuing CNH reports, which are critical for safe landings, especially during this season of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. Without these reports from the control tower, flight safety cannot be guaranteed.”
The airline emphasized its commitment to safety, saying, “As a safety-first airline, we have chosen to act responsibly by suspending operations until NiMet resumes full service.” Air Peace acknowledged the potential inconvenience this decision may cause passengers and expressed their apologies. The airline assured customers that updates regarding their bookings and options for rescheduling would be communicated directly.
Reports indicate that a broader shutdown of Nigeria’s aviation operations may be on the horizon, as the strike initiated by NiMet workers stems from ongoing disputes over delayed remuneration. This development coincides with Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, officially launching the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Minna on the same day.
