Urgent $10bn Funding Needed for 24-Hour Electricity, Power Minister Reveals
Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu announces Significant Improvement in electricity, Over 40% of Population Enjoying 20 Hours of Daily Power

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has announced a remarkable milestone in the country’s electricity supply. According to Adelabu, over 40% of Nigerians now enjoy up to 20 hours of daily power supply, a significant improvement achieved within just a year.

The Minister attributed this achievement to the various revolutionary measures implemented by his ministry with the backing of President Bola Tinubu. The major breakthrough is the increase in power generation, transmission, and distribution, with over 5,500 megawatts of power now being produced. This has resulted in a significant improvement in power supply across the nation.

The minister emphasized the critical role of stable electricity in driving economic growth and industrialization. He highlighted the importance of reliable electricity supply in facilitating job creation, enhancing operational capacity, and improving overall living standards.

Adelabu noted that the installed generation capacity has increased from 13,000 megawatts to over 14,000 megawatts due to the addition of new hydroelectric power plants and improvements in existing facilities. The minister also highlighted the signing of the new Electricity Act of 2023, which aims to decentralize and liberalize the sector, as well as the establishment of a comprehensive policy framework to enhance sector performance and market liquidity.

Infrastructure upgrades have also played a key role in the progress achieved. The ministry has commissioned and installed new transformers and mobile substations, which have significantly improved power supply across the nation.

In addition, the ministry is working to close the meter gap by implementing the Presidential Metering Initiative, which aims to install over 10 million meters in five years. The World Bank is supporting these efforts through the Distribution Recovery Program.

Looking ahead, Adelabu expressed optimism about the future of Nigeria’s electricity supply, stating that “at the end of the day, a large proportion of our population will be electrified, industries will enjoy stable electricity, and this will increase production and create employment for our people.”

The minister’s remarks come as part of a broader effort to enhance industrialization and economic growth through consistent power supply. With these initiatives underway, Nigeria is poised for significant progress in its electricity sector and beyond.
