The Ekiti State Chairman of the NUT, Olaitan Daodu, commended Governor Oyebanji for his efforts to enhance primary, secondary, and technical education.
Ekiti State, Nigeria – Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State displayed his appreciation for exemplary educators on Saturday by handing out N47.8 million in awards to exceptional primary and secondary school teachers during the 2024 World Teachers’ Day celebration.
This year’s event, themed “Valuing Teachers’ Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education,” took place at the Ekitikete Pavilion on New Iyin Road, Ado Ekiti and attracted teachers from the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, as well as their private school colleagues.
Among the top honorees were Mrs. Folayemi Modupe from St. Francis Nursery and Primary School in Igbara Odo Ekiti and Mr. Joshua Oriloye of Notre Dame Grammar School in Usi Ekiti, each receiving N6 million for their outstanding contributions in the public primary and secondary school categories, respectively.
The first runners-up were awarded N2 million each, while second runners-up took home N1.5 million each. Additionally, two exemplary school administrators received N2 million each. Other categories recognized included the best private school teacher, notable contributions in digital skills and e-teaching, and commendations for outstanding teachers with disabilities, alongside 26 consolation prizes, summing up to the total award amount of N47.8 million.
Governor Oyebanji, represented by Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye, acknowledged the critical role that teachers play in driving human development. He assured attendees that his administration would continue to prioritize the welfare of teachers and create a better learning environment.
In highlighting his administration’s dedication to education, Oyebanji pointed out several achievements, such as renovations of school structures in all primary and junior secondary schools and training for 1,103 teachers in digital education. He also mentioned that over N2.5 billion had been disbursed as counterpart funding for Universal Basic Education Commission projects for 2022 and 2023 through the State Universal Basic Education Board, along with significant infrastructure improvements and the distribution of educational materials.
The Ekiti State Chairman of the NUT, Olaitan Daodu, commended Governor Oyebanji for his efforts to enhance primary, secondary, and technical education. He praised the governor’s commitment to free and compulsory education, addressing teacher misconduct, and providing leave bonuses.
However, Daodu called for the payment of the 2018 leave bonus owed to secondary school teachers and urged immediate implementation of a retirement policy that allows for retirement at 65 years of age or after 40 years of service, a policy already adopted by multiple states.
Similarly, Sola Adigun, the Chairman of ASUSS State, lauded Oyebanji’s contributions to the welfare of teachers, advocating for their promotion to grade level 17.
