Governor Inuwa Yahaya has announced the commencement of a massive desilting exercise in Gombe state to prevent flooding and ensure the free flow of water in the state. The exercise, which is part of the government’s efforts to maintain environmental sustainability and the general well-being of the people, will involve clearing major water channels and storm drains.
According to the governor, indiscriminate dumping of waste in drains is a major contributor to environmental concerns, including flooding. He emphasized the need for collective responsibility in ensuring that waste does not get into the drains, as it poses a significant threat to human lives, property, and infrastructure.
The governor revealed that his administration spends at least N150 million monthly on waste management and street sweeping to maintain the state clean. He appealed to residents to support the government’s efforts by utilizing the newly built waste collection centres in their communities.
The desilting exercise is crucial in preventing the outbreak of diseases among communities, according to the governor. He noted that despite consistent efforts to enlighten and sensitize communities on the dangers of improper waste disposal, challenges persist.
The exercise will also help prevent damage to lives and property caused by flooding, which has been a recurring problem in the state. The governor assured that his administration is committed to ensuring that all water channels are cleared at the beginning of every rainy season.
The desilting exercise is part of a broader effort by the government to promote environmental sustainability and ensure a safe and healthy living environment for Gombe residents.
