Gombe State Enrol Over 1,000 Almajiri Children In Health Insurance Scheme

Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Manassah Jatau, highlighted his administration’s commitment to addressing the health needs of the state’s residents.

Gombe, Nigeria – In a significant stride towards improving healthcare access, more than 1,000 Almajiri children in Gombe State have been issued identity cards under the state’s Health Insurance Scheme as part of an equity programme. The event, which took place at Tsansanya Almajiri and Islamiyya Schools, was supported by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor.

During the occasion, Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Manassah Jatau, highlighted his administration’s commitment to addressing the health needs of the state’s residents. He emphasized that the introduction of the Gombe State Health Insurance Scheme, known as GoHealth, is aimed at providing healthcare access to the most vulnerable and disadvantaged groups in society.

“Without this scheme, many individuals in these categories would have been unable to access necessary health services due to financial constraints,” Yahaya stated. “Today’s event marks a significant milestone in our government’s efforts to enhance healthcare delivery, as we witness the enrollment and registration of 1,000 Almajiri students into the Gombe State Health Insurance Scheme.”

The governor underscored the importance of the initiative, noting that the Almajiri children, as a particularly vulnerable group, are often exposed to harsh living conditions, making them more susceptible to communicable diseases.

“This development will play a crucial role in reducing the incidence of illness and epidemics among the Almajiri community and the broader society. If we ensure our well-being but neglect theirs, we all remain at risk of contracting these diseases. Providing healthcare to everyone in society is essential for achieving Universal Health Coverage,” Yahaya added.

This initiative reflects the Gombe State government’s ongoing efforts to extend healthcare services to all segments of the population, particularly those who are most at risk.
