Obasanjo Urges Nigerian Leaders to Prioritize Resource Development
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called upon Nigerian leaders to effectively utilize the country’s vast resources to foster national development. His remarks were made during the 40th anniversary celebration of the Methodist Archdiocese of Abuja, held on Sunday in Abuja.
Obasanjo highlighted Nigeria’s abundant resources, noting that, like other nations blessed by God, Nigeria has everything necessary for prosperity. He compared Nigeria’s assets to Egypt’s River Nile, pointing out that the Rivers Niger and Benue, crude oil, and fertile land position Nigeria for success.
“I am convinced that God did not create Nigeria to face adversity. He has equipped us with all we require; it is our responsibility to acknowledge His blessings, particularly given that many nations lack such resources,” Obasanjo stated.
The former president urged leaders, religious figures, and citizens alike to pray for the healing of the nation, indicating that the current challenges confronting Nigeria are not the result of divine neglect. “We have mismanaged God’s gifts, but if we show humility and seek His guidance, He will heal our land,” he affirmed.
President Bola Tinubu, represented by Mr. Nyesom Wike, praised the Methodist Church of Nigeria for its dedication to social justice, education, and humanitarian initiatives. In his goodwill address, Tinubu recognized the Methodist Church’s long-standing influence and contributions to the nation’s growth through these means.
“The 40th anniversary of the Abuja Archdiocese is a testament to the church’s lasting commitment to faith, community, and service, which has spanned 183 years in Nigeria,” Tinubu remarked. He also acknowledged the church’s role in fostering peace and unity, encouraging ongoing dedication to collective action against the country’s challenges.
In his sermon titled “Our Appreciation and Gratitude to God,” Methodist Church Prelate Dr. Oliver Aba underscored the necessity of gratitude during difficult times. He referred to the biblical story of the ten lepers healed by Jesus, noting that only one returned to express thanks. Aba pointed out that Nigeria’s trials call for divine intervention and urged patience and faith among the populace. “There is hope ahead; Nigeria, remain calm; we have a promised land to anticipate,” he said.
The service honored several distinguished individuals with the Knights of John Wesley award, including Obasanjo, former leaders Yakubu Gowon and Goodluck Jonathan, as well as current President Tinubu and his wife, Oluremi Tinubu. Other recipients included notable figures like David Mark and Wale Edun, among others.
