The Federal Government has warned foreign countries to avoid interfering in Nigeria’s internal affairs, following recent protests and the arrest of foreign nationals allegedly involved in the demonstrations.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Issues Warning
Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, issued the warning during a briefing with members of the Diplomatic Corps in Abuja. He emphasized the importance of cordial international relationships while stressing that Nigeria will not tolerate foreign interference in its domestic affairs.
Government Investigates Foreign Involvement
The Department of State Services (DSS) is investigating seven Polish nationals arrested in Kano for allegedly waving Russian flags during the protests. The DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, stated that the arrest was not targeted at Polish nationals but rather a result of security enforcement.
Protests Continue in Port Harcourt
In Port Harcourt, Rivers State, protests entered their seventh day, with thugs infiltrating the demonstrations and attacking journalists and protesters. The Rivers State Police Commissioner, Olatunji Disu, expressed concern and promised a thorough investigation.
Army Arrests Soldier Involved in Fatal Shooting
The Nigerian Army has arrested a soldier who fired a warning shot that killed a 16-year-old protester in Zaria, Kaduna State. The soldier is undergoing interrogation, and the Chief of Army Staff has sent a delegation to condole with the family.
Curfew Relaxed in Plateau and Bauchi
Plateau State governor, Caleb Mutfwang, relaxed the 24-hour curfew in Jos, while Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, announced a relaxation of the curfew in Katagum Local Government Area. Normalcy has returned to most states involved in the protests.
