Port Harcourt: Community Protests Months of Blackout, Blocks PHED Office

Residents of Ogbunabali community in Port Harcourt took to the streets to protest several months of lack of electricity supply by PHED.

The protesters, who were mostly women and youths, blocked the entrance to the PHED power station located at Nzimiro street in Port Harcourt restricting vehicular movement in the area.

The protest was relatively peaceful and had the police van stationed. The resident Police DPO, Mr West who spoke with our reporter said that the police was not formally informed of the protest but had to mobilize to ensure the process was peaceful.

A women leader in the community, Dr Mrs Ngozi said the community has tried dialoguing with PHED officials but could not reach any meaningful agreement. She narrated that PHED’s inability to resolve the issue amicably led to the protest.

” Since there is no light, we cannot even pump water and fuel is scarce. Even with no light, they give us exorbitant bills,” she said.
