Orji Kalu Discloses Monthly Earnings as Senator, Defends Lawmakers’ Financial Realities
Abia State, Nigeria – Former Governor of Abia State and current Senator representing Abia North, Orji Kalu, has disclosed that his monthly earnings as a member of the National Assembly amount to N14 million. He made this statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday.
Kalu explained that this sum covers a myriad of expenses, including overhead costs, salaries for his staff, and other operational expenses related to his constituency work. He noted, “I earn N14 million for everything in a month. That is everything encompassing, the overhead, the worker’s salary, everybody.” He further emphasized that this amount is insufficient for his commuting needs to his constituency, maintaining his office, and compensating his aides.
In response to perceptions among some Nigerians that members of the National Assembly lead lavish lifestyles while citizens face economic challenges, Kalu pushed back against these notions. He asserted that the reality of lawmakers’ financial situations is often misrepresented.
Additionally, Kalu addressed claims regarding official vehicles provided to lawmakers. He clarified that only the various committees within the National Assembly receive vehicles, stating, “I am in the Senate, and a lot of things are said about the Senators, and I sit there quietly and watch, and most of these things are not true. All I know is that committees get vehicles. No lawmaker is given any vehicle.”
