A nurse in Anambra State, Amarachukwu Happiness Nzekwe, has confessed to using a hot pressing iron on her 13-year-old househelp, claiming it was an act of discipline. The 38-year-old, who hails from Ezinifite in Aguata Local Government Area, admitted to the incident after being arrested by officials from the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare.
Nzekwe stated that she used the hot iron on the boy after accusing him of stealing her money. According to her confession, she placed the pressing iron on a stove to heat it before pressing it against the boy’s back when he refused to admit to the theft. “All the suffering I have been going through was because of this boy. I had surgery and came back home to discover that my money was missing. I didn’t plug the iron into electricity; I just placed it on a stove to discipline him,” she told the Commissioner.
Officials from the Ministry identified the boy as Nzekwe’s nephew, revealing that she often locks him up without food as a form of punishment. The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. Ify Obinabo, who led the arrest, condemned the act and vowed that Nzekwe would be prosecuted. She warned that such inhumane behavior would not be tolerated in Anambra State under the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
Following the arrest, Nzekwe was handed over to the police for further investigation and legal action.
