Rivers State Governor Awards Scholarships to Wigwe University Students

In a significant move, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has granted scholarships to 100 students at Wigwe University in Isiokpo, located within the Ikwerre Local Government Area. This initiative coincides with the university’s commencement of academic activities, just eight months following the untimely passing of its founder, the late Dr. Herbert Wigwe.

Dr. Wigwe, along with his wife Chizoba and their eldest son Chizzy, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash on February 9, 2024, in Nipton, California, USA. Their remains were interred in a private tomb at the university grounds, which Dr. Wigwe established on March 9, 2024.

Following Dr. Wigwe’s death, there were concerns about the university’s future; however, Governor Fubara attended the university’s official opening on Thursday as the special guest of honour, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to uphold the late philanthropist’s vision for the institution.

Represented by the Education Commissioner, Dr. Ovy Chukwuma, the governor expressed his satisfaction with the university’s curriculum after a thorough review. He stated that the establishment of Wigwe University will significantly influence both undergraduate and postgraduate education, praising the enduring legacy of Dr. Wigwe. “What we have seen here we will make sure it lives forever,” he exclaimed.

Dr. Chukwuma announced that the recent interviews for new students resulted in the awarding of 100 scholarships, with a distinguishing focus on inclusivity. Out of the total, 70 scholarships were designated for Rivers State indigenes, while 30% went to non-indigenes residing in the state.

He urged the university management to remain committed to the ideals envisioned by the late founder. The Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Marwan Al-Akaidi, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that Wigwe University was established on principles inspired by Dr. Wigwe’s legacy. He highlighted the institution’s mission to harness Africa’s potential for prosperity and to cultivate insightful and courageous leaders poised to steer the continent’s future.

In summary, the establishment of Wigwe University and the scholarship offerings reflect the state government’s dedication to educational advancement and the fulfillment of Dr. Wigwe’s vision for sustainable growth and leadership development in Africa.
