Abuja, Nigeria – Prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for his recent meeting with former President Muhammadu Buhari in Kaduna State.

Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s The Morning Show on Tuesday, George condemned the visit and dismissed ongoing efforts to form a coalition mega party, describing it as a ploy that could destabilise the PDP and undermine its unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

George questioned the rationale behind Atiku’s engagement with the former president, who, according to him, has never been aligned with the PDP’s vision. “You’re a member of a solid organisation, and now you want to pull out? You’re meeting with Baba Buhari—is he a member of our party?” George queried. “Have you discussed your ‘mega something’ with anyone in the PDP? Is this party your private fiefdom? Nobody owns the PDP.”

Atiku, the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has recently called on opposition figures to unite and form a formidable political coalition capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu in the next election cycle. His visit to Buhari, accompanied by former Governors Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna and Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto, has since sparked reactions across the political spectrum.

But George insisted that such a move should not be spearheaded in isolation, especially without the consensus of party stakeholders. “You bring it to the party. Let us sit, talk, and agree. Once it is approved, then you move. You don’t just flip-flop because of personal ambition,” he said.

Lamenting the composition of those present at the Buhari meeting, George pointed out an apparent regional imbalance. “Look at the people who visited Buhari—they’re all from one side. Where are the others from our party?” he asked. “My conclusion is, what exactly is this man trying to achieve with this mega party idea? Is it an attempt to create another division between the North and the South?”

He urged PDP members to shun divisive politics and instead rally together to rebuild the party in preparation for the 2027 elections. According to him, the focus should be on internal unity and collective strength, rather than personal political pursuits.
