FAAN assured the public of its dedication to maintaining safe and functional airport facilities, adding that all necessary resources have been mobilised to ensure the repair work is completed within the scheduled timeframe.
Enugu, Nigeria – The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the temporary closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, to allow for emergency repairs on a damaged section of the runway.
The closure, which takes effect from Monday, April 22, 2025, will last until May 6, 2025. During this period, all flight operations to and from the airport will be redirected to nearby airports.
FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, disclosed the development in a statement issued early Saturday. She explained that the decision became necessary following a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface of a critical portion of the runway.
“In line with Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations and as part of our commitment to ensuring passenger safety and upgrading airport infrastructure, the runway will be completely shut to all landings and takeoffs while repairs are carried out,” the statement read.
Orah acknowledged the inconvenience the closure may cause and appealed for the cooperation and understanding of airport users and stakeholders. She also extended an apology for the late notice of the development, describing it as an unexpected but urgent situation.
FAAN assured the public of its dedication to maintaining safe and functional airport facilities, adding that all necessary resources have been mobilised to ensure the repair work is completed within the scheduled timeframe.
