Farmer Arrested After Allegedly Beating Suspected Thief to Death in Ondo State
In a disturbing incident in the Odigbo Council Area of Ondo State, a farmer named Adegoke has been accused of beating a suspected thief to death while attempting to defend his farm from alleged invaders. Reports indicate that Adegoke’s farm, located at Mile 10 in Ore, had previously been targeted by thieves, leading to significant losses, including his motorcycle and various crops such as cocoa pods, kola nuts, and plantains.
According to sources within the community, Adegoke, who is known locally as “Ariya,” had tolerated the thefts for a considerable time. However, his patience wore thin when he confronted four individuals he believed were trespassing on his property. Adegoke managed to capture two of the suspects, reportedly from the neighboring Aba Tuntun community, and physically assaulted them. Tragically, one of the suspects succumbed to the injuries sustained during the attack, creating heightened tension within the community.
Following the incident, law enforcement authorities apprehended Adegoke and transferred him to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Akure for further investigation.
Police spokesperson Funmi Odunlami provided insight into the situation, stating that the suspects were said to be in Adegoke’s farm to collect snails, as opposed to stealing. Odunlami noted that it was, in fact, Adegoke’s wife who initially alerted authorities about the ongoing thefts, prompting the farmer to rush to the scene and confront the alleged intruders.
Investigations are ongoing as police detectives work to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding this tragic confrontation.
