Wike Blames Rivers State Governor Fubara for Escalating Violence Following Election Dispute
Abuja, Nigeria – Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has accused Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara of instigating violence in the region by disregarding a court ruling. Wike’s comments were made during an interview on Channels Television‘s “Politics Today” on Tuesday.
Wike stated, “I’m not solely blaming the Governor, but he is fundamentally responsible for the unrest in the state.” He further expressed, “On the day of the election, I was in Abuja, not in Rivers. Those who were chanting ‘No Wike, No Rivers’ are not under my influence.”
The former governor reiterated his position by holding Fubara accountable for disobeying a legal judgment, suggesting that this defiance has led to a significant breakdown of order within Rivers State. “In my tenure, I consistently adhered to the law. You’ve heard the Governor mention our state descending into anarchy, where the rule of law is being flouted,” Wike remarked.
He emphasized the importance of respecting judicial decisions, stating, “One must adhere to court rulings. Acting outside the law only invites chaos and violence.”
This tension follows reports detailing how five individuals lost their lives and three local government secretariats were set ablaze amid instances of post-election violence. This unrest was allegedly sparked by political thugs affiliated with the previous administration, who protested the results of the local government elections in Rivers State.
