In a significant financial surge, the Kamala Harris campaign raised a staggering $310 million in July, spurred by her entry into the presidential race as the Democratic nominee.
This impressive sum more than doubles the $137 million raised by former President Donald Trump, who recently headlined the Republican National Convention following an assassination attempt.
As of this week, Harris’ campaign and affiliated committees boast $377 million in cash on hand, surpassing Trump’s $327 million war chest by $50 million. These figures reveal that the Harris campaign has raised over $1 billion so far, setting a record for the fastest campaign to break the 10-figure mark in history.
The influx of funds has revitalized the financial standing of the Democratic Party, which had faced challenges under Joe Biden in recent months. Trump’s significant cash hauls, following his hush money felony convictions in New York, had previously erased Biden’s cash lead. Additionally, Biden’s poor performance in the June debate and subsequent calls from Democratic officials for his withdrawal had led to a freeze in fundraising efforts. Major donors canceled events and withheld funds, while small-dollar donations dwindled, forcing the campaign to adjust its financial expectations for July.
However, Biden’s withdrawal on July 21 and Harris’ subsequent elevation reinvigorated the campaign’s finances. Major Democratic donors quickly committed $150 million to a pro-Democratic super PAC, while small-dollar donors flocked to support Harris’ presidential bid. A series of Zoom fundraisers featuring celebrity appearances and coalition calls, such as Black Women for Harris, Latinas for Harris, and White Dudes for Harris, collectively raised over $20 million.
Notably, two-thirds of the July total came from first-time donors, with a majority of contributions being $200 or less. The campaign also reported significant growth among Gen Z and millennial donors, demographics that Biden had struggled to engage.
“This is a history-making haul for a candidate who will make history this November,” stated Harris campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez. “The tremendous outpouring of support we’ve seen in just a short time makes clear the Harris coalition is mobilized, growing, and ready to put in the work to defeat Trump this November.”
