Lagos State reaches a milestone with over 1.3 million residents enrolled in the ILERA EKO health scheme, highlighting its commitment to universal health coverage and inclusive healthcare access.
Lagos State has reached a major milestone in its journey toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC), with over 1.3 million residents enrolled in the ILERA EKO health insurance scheme.
Launched under the Lagos State Health Scheme Law in 2015, ILERA EKO was created to reduce the financial burden of medical care for residents. At a media parley marking Universal Health Coverage Day 2024, Dr. Emmanuella Zamba, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), emphasized the scheme’s growth and impact:
“Over 1.3 million residents have been enrolled on the ILERA EKO scheme, which offers comprehensive healthcare coverage for Lagosians.”
Dr. Zamba stressed that universal health coverage is not only a global aspiration but also a human right. She stated:
“Investing in health strengthens the backbone of society, ensures a productive workforce, and fosters resilience.”
The state has leveraged technology and extensive awareness campaigns to boost participation. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Executive Order domesticating the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Act mandates enrollment in ILERA EKO for all Lagos residents, reinforcing the government’s commitment to universal health coverage.
Dr. Zamba announced that LASHMA is intensifying efforts to enhance service delivery, stating:
“Plans are underway to expand the healthcare provider network, improve access, and maintain high-quality services for all.”
Mrs. Adetoro Tayo-Adetoro, Head of Planning at LASHMA, noted that ILERA EKO includes a broad provider network across public and private facilities in all Local Government Areas. Partnerships with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) have simplified enrollment processes, enabling residents to register at 62 LASRRA outlets statewide.
Tayo-Adetoro highlighted the success of the “Drug Access Expansion” program, launched in April 2024, which allows enrollees to access prescribed medications at over 300 community pharmacies. This initiative enhances convenience and ensures continuity of care.
The Eko Social Health Alliance (EKOSHA), a key intervention under ILERA EKO, provides free or subsidized healthcare to vulnerable and indigent groups. Tayo-Adetoro emphasized the scheme’s inclusivity:
“Health for all is not just a slogan; it’s a commitment. Together, we can achieve this goal.”
As Lagos State celebrates Universal Health Coverage Day 2024, Dr. Zamba reiterated the administration’s goal of expanding ILERA EKO to reach every resident. She urged Lagosians to register for the scheme and take part in building a healthier society.
“Achieving health for all requires collective efforts. Let’s ensure that no one is left behind in accessing quality healthcare,” Dr. Zamba stated.
