A shocking incident has unfolded at the border between Hong Kong and mainland China, where a traveler was caught attempting to smuggle over 100 live snakes into the country.
The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was intercepted by customs officials as he attempted to leave Hong Kong and enter the city of Shenzhen.
Upon further inspection, customs officers discovered that the man’s trousers were stuffed with six canvas bags, each containing a variety of snakes in different shapes, sizes, and colors. The reptiles included milk snakes and corn snakes, many of which were non-native species.
According to official sources, the total number of seized snakes reached 104. An accompanying video shows two border agents carefully examining transparent plastic bags filled with wriggling snakes in shades of red, pink, and white.
China has been at the forefront of combating animal trafficking in recent years, with severe penalties imposed on those who violate biosecurity and disease control laws by introducing non-native species without proper authorization.
While the authorities have not specified the traveler’s punishment, they emphasized that those who disregard the rules will be held accountable according to the law. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Chinese authorities in curbing wildlife trafficking and protecting the country’s unique biodiversity.
