An early morning fire on Thursday devastated three shops at the Ladipo Baale Roundabout Plank Market in the Orile-Iganmu area of Lagos State, causing property damage worth millions of naira.
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed in a statement that no deaths were recorded during the incident.
The fire, which ignited around midnight, originated from a pile of planks due to a power surge and quickly spread to three adjacent shops within the market.
Oke-Osanyitolu noted that, thanks to the swift response of emergency teams, no casualties or injuries were reported. Additionally, a significant amount of planks and property valued at millions of naira were salvaged during the firefighting efforts.
“Collaborative efforts of the responders were able to quickly bring the fire under control before it could spread to more shops,” he said.
A multi-agency response team, comprising LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Nigerian Police Force, was deployed to address the emergency situation.
Following the incident, members of the Plank Market Association and the LASEMA Response Team conducted a public advocacy campaign on preventive measures to avoid future incidents.
