The Acting Director of the Abuja Fire Service, Engr. Adebayo Zacchaeus, commended the firefighters for their swift response and efforts in containing the fire.
Abuja – A devastating late-night fire swept through the Kaura Modern Market in Abuja on Friday, resulting in the destruction of 39 outdoor shops, leaving vendors and traders to face significant losses.
The blaze, which was triggered by an electrical spark, began around 11 p.m. and raged until 2 a.m. on Saturday, when it was finally extinguished by a combined team of firefighters from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service (FFS).
The spokesperson for the FCT Fire Service, MT Ibrahim, confirmed the incident and provided details of the items lost in the fire, including foodstuffs, generators, refrigerators, fruits, umbrellas, electrical appliances, and parts of the roof.
According to Ibrahim, the fire started due to an electrical spark from a power changeover installed in one of the shops. The presence of a generator containing petrol in the same shop further fueled the flames, making the fire more difficult to control.
The Acting Director of the Abuja Fire Service, Engr. Adebayo Zacchaeus, commended the firefighters for their swift response and efforts in containing the fire.
No casualties were reported, but the financial losses are expected to be significant as shop owners assess the damage. An investigation into the cause of the electrical fault is ongoing.
