A chaotic scene unfolded in the Ipaja area of Lagos State on Thursday morning as over 100 suspected hoodlums, reportedly Okada riders, attacked a police station.
The incident is believed to be a retaliation against a police raid on motorcycle riders in the area.
Eyewitnesses reported an exchange of gunshots between the attackers and policemen, with passersby fleeing for safety. However, the police successfully repelled the attack, with officers and men of the Ipaja division putting up a strong resistance.
According to Police spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, the attackers were Okada riders who opposed an enforcement operation carried out by police operatives. While Hundeyin did not confirm any fatalities, the police statement revealed that two attackers were fatally injured during the incident.
Despite the chaos, police reinforcements from the Area Command and Rapid Response Squad (RRS) arrived swiftly, and over 200 motorcycles were impounded, with some attackers arrested and a locally made firearm recovered.
The Lagos State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing laws and maintaining order, stating that it will not be intimidated into abandoning its responsibilities.
Normalcy has been restored to the area, with additional police detachments deployed to ensure peace and security.
