UK-based cab driver confesses to receiving salary from Nigerian government despite relocating

A Nigerian civil servant, identified as Sabitu Adams, has revealed that he continues to receive a monthly salary from the Nigerian government despite relocating to the UK two years ago.

Adams, who now works as a taxi driver in the UK, has not resigned from his position in Nigeria and has an arrangement with his relative, who is his boss, to continue receiving payments.

Adams’ confession comes after President Bola Tinubu directed that all civil servants drawing salaries from the government after relocating abroad must refund the money and face punishment, along with their supervisors and department heads.

However, Adams expressed no concern over the president’s directive, stating that he earns a better income as a taxi driver in the UK.

He also revealed that he has chosen not to resign from his Nigerian job, leaving the option open to return to his position in the future.

This case highlights the ongoing issue of “ghost workers” in the Nigerian civil service, where individuals continue to receive salaries without performing their duties.

Despite annual biometric verifications and claims of discovering ghost workers, no one has been prosecuted or punished for the fraud.
