In a heart-wrenching incident in Enugu, a mother of three tragically lost her life after leaving her children at a police station and running under a moving vehicle.
The woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, arrived at the Ogui Road police station, handed over her three children, aged six, four, and two, to officers, then disrobed herself and ran into the path of a moving vehicle, resulting in her death.
According to reports, the woman’s husband had abandoned the family months prior, leaving them to face increased hardship. The eldest child, when questioned about their father, could only state that he was “lost,” unable to provide further details about their family or address.
Upon learning of the incident, Nkechinyere Mbah, the wife of the Enugu State governor, rushed to the police station.
Expressing deep concern, Nkechinyere Mbah indicated that the woman may have been suffering from depression. In a compassionate gesture, she pledged to personally care for and support the children, ensuring their education from nursery to university through her Custos Care Foundation.
She emphasized the importance of seeking counseling for depression and advised against making impulsive decisions. She called upon Ngozi Enih, the Commissioner of the Ministry of Children, Gender, and Social Development, to intensify awareness and counseling efforts, particularly for individuals battling depression.
In response to the First Lady’s intervention, the children were relocated from the police station to a safe home, where the state government will oversee their care and well-being. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support within communities.
