Presidency Unveils Multipurpose ID Card for Loans and Other Benefits
The Nigerian Presidency has unveiled plans to launch a transformative multipurpose ID card under the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

Highlighted in a sensitization video shared by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Media Centre, the card is poised to enhance transparency, financial accessibility, and governance for millions of Nigerians.

Designed to bridge gaps in financial inclusion, the multipurpose ID card will provide citizens with verifiable credit scores based on their financial histories, facilitating access to loans from government schemes and financial institutions.

The Presidency emphasized that the initiative aims to integrate over 100 million Nigerians into the formal banking system, addressing a long-standing challenge of economic exclusion.

In collaboration with the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), the NIMC will leverage the National Identification Number (NIN) to generate credit scores for users, paving the way for broader access to financial tools and resources.

Beyond its financial benefits, the multipurpose ID card will serve as an indispensable tool for accessing various government services. The card will also support Nigeria’s digital currency, eNaira, enabling secure and efficient transactions that comply with national standards.

The Head of Card Management Services at NIMC, Dr. Peter Iwegbu, explained during a recent media workshop in Lagos that individuals must request the card specifically. To ensure accessibility, banks across the country have been enlisted to handle distribution, with a uniform pricing structure to eliminate cost barriers.

The card’s multifunctionality stems from its partnership with AfriGO, developed in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS). It will consolidate identity verification, payment processing, and access to government interventions into a single platform, streamlining service delivery across ministries and agencies.

The Presidency has called on community leaders and parents to champion the adoption of the multipurpose ID card, urging them to educate citizens on its benefits.
