In a groundbreaking move, the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) is poised to revolutionize its operations by introducing night services before the second quarter of 2024, according to the revelation made by NRC’s Managing Director, Fidet Okhiria, in an exclusive interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday.
Okhiria underscored the significance of round-the-clock operations for trains, expressing dissatisfaction with the current limitations imposed by daytime services due to security concerns. He articulated that the essence of trains is to operate at all times, catering to the diverse travel preferences of the public.
Despite challenges in the country’s security landscape, the NRC aims to reintroduce passenger and freight train services on vital routes, such as Port-Harcourt to Aba, Lagos to Kano, and Kaduna to enhance connectivity and convenience.
The Managing Director outlined ambitious plans to implement six daily train trips on the standard gauge across various routes. Specifically, the Lagos-Ibadan, Warri-Itakpe, and Abuja-Kaduna routes are set to witness an increase in the number of trips, moving from the current four to six, providing a more frequent and accessible transportation option for commuters.
This strategic initiative aligns with the broader vision of revitalizing railway services and optimizing the potential of dry ports across the country.
