A deadly confrontation between police officers and commercial motorcycle riders, known as Okada riders, has resulted in the death of one civilian.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, in an area of Lagos State.

According to police reports, two officers attached to the Lagos State Taskforce went on an “illegal duty” with some civilians, leading to a violent clash with Okada riders. A graphic video of the victim being run over by the riders has sparked widespread outrage on social media.

Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the incident and ensuing investigation. “The officers and civilians went on an illegal duty, which led to an attack by motorcycle riders, resulting in the death of one civilian,” Hundeyin stated.

The police have detained the involved officers and launched a search for their civilian accomplices. Disciplinary actions are underway, and investigations aim to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible for the tragic incident.
