Abuja, Nigeria – The Senate has reiterated its commitment to advancing the Tax Reform Bills, rejecting media reports that deliberations on the bills have been suspended or withdrawn.

Speaking during Thursday’s plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized that the upper chamber remains dedicated to representing Nigerians’ interests and will not be intimidated by external pressures.

Akpabio was responding to a point of order raised by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who also cautioned against misinformation circulating on social media. Both leaders dismissed reports suggesting that the Senate had halted discussions on the bills.

“The Senate cannot be bullied. Any reform that we are convinced serves the interest of Nigerians will proceed. These bills contain provisions that are in the best interest of the public,” Akpabio stated.

The Senate leader, Senator Bamidele, reinforced this position, noting that the Tax Reform Bills, which were forwarded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in October, remain under active consideration. He stressed that only the executive arm of government can withdraw the bills, and attempts to pressure the legislature are undemocratic.

“We have not suspended or withdrawn deliberations on the tax reform bills,” Bamidele said. “We don’t take orders from anyone or any office, no matter how highly placed. The Senate remains steadfast in its legislative responsibilities.”

Special Committee Formed for Consultation

The Senate has set up a special committee, led by Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), to address contentious issues within the bills. This committee will engage with stakeholders, including the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, and other key figures such as governors, religious leaders, and business leaders, to resolve disagreements.

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who presided over Wednesday’s plenary, noted that the executive arm supports the Senate’s efforts to address the concerns surrounding the bills.

“The committee will meet with the Attorney General and report back to the Senate before a public hearing,” Barau explained.

Akpabio also assured Nigerians that the legislative process would be thorough and transparent. “Public hearings and consultations are imperative to resolve uncertainties. If six weeks are insufficient, we will extend the time. We are committed to transparency and addressing all concerns,” he said.

Regional Resistance to Tax reform Bills

The Tax Reform Bills have faced significant opposition, particularly from Northern Nigeria. The Senate, however, has reiterated its independence and commitment to addressing all concerns to ensure the reforms align with public interest.

The legislative body has taken steps to engage diverse stakeholders to ensure the final outcome reflects the collective interest of Nigerians.
