Abuja, Nigeria — Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the escalating political conflict between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, describing it as a potential threat to national security.

In a statement issued by her Chief Press Secretary, Arogbonlo Israel, on Tuesday in Abuja, the Senator emphasized the need for prompt action to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control. She expressed concerns over the growing tensions, noting that the ongoing feud could have far-reaching implications for the peace and stability of the South-South region and the country at large.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan highlighted the increasing incidents of violence, intimidation, and allegations of electoral malpractice that have characterized the crisis, which she believes could undermine democratic governance and embolden perpetrators of political violence.

“The situation in Rivers demands urgent attention, and I implore Mr. President to take decisive action to prevent further escalation,” Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan said. “We cannot afford to watch as the crisis deepens, threatening the stability of the region. President Tinubu’s leadership is crucial in resolving this impasse.”

The Senator called on President Tinubu to ensure that the FCT Minister focuses on his responsibilities in Abuja, allowing the Rivers State Governor to carry out his duties in accordance with constitutional provisions. She urged the President to safeguard lives and property and ensure that state institutions remain impartial in handling the crisis.

Akpoti-Uduaghan warned that failure to address the conflict could have dire consequences for national security and stability, further eroding public trust in democratic processes.

“If left unchecked, the crisis may undermine Nigeria’s democratic progress, embolden perpetrators of violence and electoral malpractices, and pose a serious threat to national security and stability,” she stated.

The Senator’s appeal comes amid heightened political tension in Rivers State, with various stakeholders calling for restraint and dialogue to resolve the ongoing conflict.
