Philip Shaibu, the recently reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Shaibu made the announcement on Saturday in Benin City, barely 24 hours after hinting at his exit from the PDP. He was accompanied by leading members of the Dan Orbih-led Legacy Group of the PDP, who also defected to the APC.
In a statement, Shaibu expressed his gratitude to be back in the APC, where he felt accepted and valued. He also announced that the Legacy Group had moved to the APC to add value to the party and take back the state.
Shaibu’s defection comes after a federal high court in Abuja nullified his impeachment as deputy governor, citing political motivations. The court ordered his reinstatement and directed the inspector-general of police to restore his security.
The Edo state government has reacted to Shaibu’s defection, describing his appointment of aides as “provocative”.
