Port Harcourt, Nigeria – The Coalition of Councillorship Candidates for the 2024 local government elections in Rivers State has declared that it will not contest the election results in court, in a bid to foster peace and unity in the state.

This decision was announced during a press conference held on Saturday in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Speaking on behalf of the Coalition, Akwu Chilegide Jonathan, the Chairman of the Forum and Accord Party Councillorship Candidate for Ward 1 in Emohua Local Government Area, stated that although the election results were not in their favor, the Coalition remains committed to promoting collective development in the state.

“We will not contest the election results in court to promote peace and collective development in Rivers State and support Governor Siminalayi Fubara at this time,” Jonathan said.

Jonathan emphasized the Coalition’s focus on inclusive governance, where every citizen has a voice regardless of political affiliation or background. He noted the importance of learning from their grassroots engagements with local communities and urged Governor Fubara to prioritize collaboration with them to address the needs of Rivers State at the grassroots level.

In a joint statement, the Coalition condemned recent acts of vandalism targeting local government offices and called on law enforcement agencies to hold the perpetrators accountable.

Cyril Nwaoma, Secretary of the Coalition, echoed Jonathan’s sentiments, expressing the candidates’ dedication to supporting Governor Fubara. He highlighted the significant effort candidates had put into building organizational structures during the elections and reiterated their desire to work toward the good of the state.

Nwaoma further called on Rivers State youths to refrain from unlawful actions and avoid being exploited, urging them instead to contribute positively to the state’s development.

The Coalition of Councillorship Candidates joins the Coalition of Chairmanship Candidates, who had earlier pledged their support for Governor Fubara following the conclusion of the elections, signaling a collective effort towards peace, unity, and development in Rivers State.
