The State House of Assembly demonstrated their commitment to enhancing the transport sector of Rivers State.

Port Harcourt, Nigeria – The Rivers State House of Assembly has passed two significant bills into law: the Rivers State Transport Company Reform Bill 2024 and the Rivers State Emergency Management Agency Bill 2024.

Details of the sitting were made public in a statement released by the Special Assistant on Media to the Speaker, Stephen Banigo.

The session, which took place at the Hallowed Chambers, Government House, Port Harcourt, was presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo.

The Transport Bill was presented by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Orubienimigha Timothy, while the Emergency Management Bill was presented by the Leader of the House, Hon. Sokari Goodboy Sokari. Both bills went through second and third readings before being passed into law.

In the statement, the Speaker praised the sponsors for their efforts, highlighting the Transport Bill’s potential to address security challenges, particularly the “one chance” crime issue, by improving the profiling of commercial vehicles. He stated that the law would enhance security, increase revenue, and improve service delivery in the transport sector.

Regarding the Emergency Management Bill, the Speaker lauded its importance in aligning the state’s response to emergencies with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), ensuring better preparedness for natural disasters, fires, accidents, and other emergency situations in Rivers State.

The statement also recalled the public hearings conducted for both bills, where stakeholders and members of the public contributed valuable insights, which were incorporated into the final drafts presented at the plenary.

The House has adjourned its next sitting to Tuesday, October 8, 2024.
