Governor Fubara Warns of Personal Loss in Upcoming Local Government Elections in Rivers State
PORT HARCOURT—Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has acknowledged that he will bear significant personal losses in the imminent local government elections, as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) decides not to participate. Fubara made this statement during a meeting with political stakeholders at the Government House on Thursday, where he discussed the preparations for the elections.
Fubara remarked, “Go ahead and fulfill your legal obligations as stipulated by the RSIEC Law. The RSIEC will handle its responsibilities, and once they conclude their processes, the government will take over to ensure the completion of events, all by the special grace of God, within a few days.”
He expressed candidly, “In this electoral process, I stand to lose the most because my party is not taking part. This is simply a fact! However, following the Supreme Court decision mandating elected officials to oversee local government matters, I must fulfill my duties as governor.”
He elaborated that following the Supreme Court ruling, he and other officials were engaged by the President, leading to a consensus on a 90-day compliance period, which necessitates proceeding with the local council elections despite the PDP’s absence.
Fubara thanked loyal party members for their continued support and commitment to democratic principles, stating, “Many of you here are devoted party members who may not derive any benefits from this, yet you choose to stand by us. So, what is the issue?”
He went on to express his gratitude for their dedication to democracy and the rule of law, emphasizing their role in maintaining Rivers State’s integrity within the nation. “I am thankful for your unwavering support and assure you that together we will continue to elevate the status of Rivers State.”
In conclusion, he urged the assembly not to allow any misinformation or disruptive propaganda to dampen their resolve during this period. He uplifted the spirits of those present, reinforcing the government’s commitment to preventing any confusion in Rivers State as they move forward with the electoral process.
