A US Army intelligence analyst has admitted to providing sensitive defense information to China, including documents detailing US military tactics, weapon systems, and strategic assessments.
Sergeant Korbein Schultz, who had top-secret security clearance, was arrested in March at Fort Campbell, a military base on the Kentucky-Tennessee border. On Tuesday, Schultz multiple charges, including conspiring to disclose national defense information, exporting technical data without a license, and bribery, according to the Justice Department.
The charges reveal that Schultz handed over dozens of classified documents to an individual in Hong Kong, believed to be linked to the Chinese government. In exchange, Schultz was paid $42,000.
Among the sensitive materials provided was an analysis of US Army lessons from the Ukraine-Russia conflict, intended for use in a potential defense of Taiwan. Other documents detailed Chinese military tactics and US military operations in South Korea and the Philippines, as well as information on US aircraft and missile systems.
“China is aggressively targeting our military personnel and national security information,” said Robert Wells, executive assistant director of the FBI’s National Security Branch. “We will do everything in our power to safeguard that information.”
Schultz is now facing the possibility of decades behind bars, with a sentencing hearing set for January 23, 2025. His arrest follows the recent cases of two US Navy sailors in California, also charged with spying for China.
