A 74-year-old Ghanaian man, Nelson Shardey, has been granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK after a lengthy legal battle.
Shardey, who has lived in the UK for nearly 50 years, was previously informed that he had no right to remain in the country.
The Home Office’s decision comes after a significant public outcry and a legal challenge that highlighted Shardey’s long-term residence and contributions to the community. Shardey arrived in the UK in 1977 as a student and has since built a life, marrying twice, raising two sons, and running a newsagent.
In 2019, Shardey’s application for a British passport was denied, leading to a protracted legal battle. However, the Home Office has now acknowledged the exceptional nature of Shardey’s case, allowing him to stay permanently.
Shardey expressed his relief and gratitude, thanking everyone who supported him throughout his ordeal. His lawyer, Nicola Burgess, praised his resilience and called for reforms to simplify the immigration system.
Shardey’s sons, Aaron and Jacob, also expressed their heartfelt thanks, saying, “This victory means the absolute world to us. We are so grateful to our legal team and everyone who supported us.”
The decision has been met with widespread relief and joy, with many celebrating Shardey’s finally being granted the permanent residency he deserves.
