Wike further summoned an emergency meeting between the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and CGC, instructing the contractor to make a firm commitment to completing the project by May 2025.
Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has criticized the contractors handling the 15-kilometre Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX) project over delays, warning that failure to meet project deadlines could lead to contract revocation.
During a site inspection on Friday, Wike expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC), the firm responsible for the left-hand service carriageway of the road project, which stretches from Ring Road 1 to Wasa Junction.
Despite receiving over 80 percent of the contract sum, the company has reportedly completed only about 50 percent of the work.
“Very bad, I am not encouraged. Yesterday, my attention was drawn to the state of this road while inspecting the Apo-Karshi road, which took us through Wasa. I passed through this area to see the work of CGC, a company I once respected. But regarding this road, I am not happy,” Wike stated.
He further summoned an emergency meeting between the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and CGC, instructing the contractor to make a firm commitment to completing the project by May 2025.
“Let them go and commit themselves and tell us they will finish this project by May. That’s the only way I am going to accept it,” Wike declared.
The minister emphasized that underperforming contractors will not be tolerated, irrespective of their status as local or foreign firms. “We don’t have any relationship with non-performing contractors. If you don’t perform, we kick you out. There is no sentiment whether you are an indigenous contractor or a foreign contractor. You can’t just collect our money and think we will let you go. No. When we kick you out, we make you pay for it,” he warned.
The Outer Southern Expressway project is a critical infrastructure development aimed at easing traffic congestion in the FCT.
