World Bank, Nigeria Partner to Boost Fishery Production

Responding to the World Bank’s interest, Oyetola expressed appreciation for the support and outlined several key initiatives being undertaken by the ministry.

Abuja, Nigeria – The World Bank has expressed its willingness to collaborate with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to enhance the country’s fishery production, following the strategic creation of the ministry by President Bola Tinubu.

During a courtesy visit to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, the head of the World Bank delegation, Ms. Lia Sieghart, praised the establishment of the ministry, describing it as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to advancing the maritime sector. Sieghart emphasized the importance of supporting Nigeria’s efforts in building a sustainable and integrated blue economy, with a focus on sustainable fisheries.

She highlighted the vast potential for growth in Nigeria’s fishery sector and outlined the World Bank’s readiness to contribute through the provision of expertise and technical knowledge.

“We are eager to identify areas of collaboration that will ensure long-term benefits for Nigeria’s maritime industry,” Sieghart said, commending President Tinubu for the strategic move.

Responding to the World Bank’s interest, Oyetola expressed appreciation for the support and outlined several key initiatives being undertaken by the ministry. He noted that mapping Nigeria’s marine and Blue Economy resources is currently underway, and emphasized that the development of fisheries and aquaculture is central to the ministry’s objectives.

“Fishery is the flagship of our ministry. We are taking steps to regulate the sector and have designated terminals for fishing activities. Our goal is to establish a sustainable fishery program, making it attractive to the youth and reducing reliance on fish imports by encouraging local production,” Oyetola said.

The minister reaffirmed the ministry’s readiness to collaborate with the World Bank to achieve these ambitious plans and promote the growth of the maritime sector.

The meeting was attended by senior officials, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Oloruntola Olufemi; Director of Maritime Safety and Security, Babatunde Bombata; and Prof. Busayo Fakinlede, Technical Aide to the Minister, among others.
